“In every community, there is work to be done. In every nation, there are wounds to heal. In every heart, there is the power to do it.” – Marianne Williamson

Many would agree that the key to serving families across communities is together in unity. One of the best ways to achieve success for North Carolina families is by working together in partnership and collaboration. Several family-serving programs across the state and country are constantly seeking additional funding to provide concrete support to our families. None of us can do this alone. The load may be heavy, but our hearts and hands are willing to serve and in Guilford County, we have found two programs that have answered that call.

Housed within the Guilford County Department of Social Services is the Thriving Families Support Services (TFSS) program. This team serves as a prevention team focused on, “promoting child and family well-being, with the aim of preventing child maltreatment, abuse, neglect, and dependency.” TFSS accomplishes this goal by partnering, “with families in Guilford County to help them strengthen their self-sufficiency and overall well-being.”

Some of the services offered to families who participate in the TFSS program include family advocacy, medical & health services coordination, mental health services, food assistance referrals, parental and family support, budgeting services and more. Their team works together with the family to help them identify their needs and support them throughout their journey to success.

Positive Childhood Alliance NC (PCANC) was honored to work with the TFSS team in the initial stages to provide a Connections Matter presentation as well as an Introduction to the Protective Factors training to help equip them with the tools necessary to work with families from a strengths-based approach. We are so proud of their team and the connections that have been fostered through our relationship together!

Next is the Fairview Family Resource Center (FFRC) which is a part of the Family Service of the Piedmont (FSP) that is also located in Guilford County. The FFRC is housed inside of the Southside Recreation Center in High Point, NC and provides free services to families residing in the Fairview Elementary School District.

As a part of PCANC’s NC Family Resource Center Network, the Fairview Family Resource Center serves as a community hub — a very special place in the Fairview Community where families can turn to and receive community-based services to help meet their needs. They offer services from a multi-generational approach — serving both youth and adults.

Some of the benefits offered through their youth programs include nutrition and cooking classes, computer literacy, afterschool care, mentoring, youth leadership development and more. Benefits offered through their adult programs include GED assistance, case management, participation in their Positive Parenting Program, individual/group counseling and so much more.

We are so grateful to the FFRC team for being our partner here at PCANC and will continue to support the vital work they do every day in their community!

Each year, Family Service of the Piedmont, the Fairview Family Resource Center, and our partners at Guilford County Department of Social Services, recognize and honor April as Child Abuse Prevention Month.

This year, Family Service of the Piedmont hosted a, “Walk for Prevention” at the Southside Recreation Center in High Point. It was a wonderful honor for our Community Relations Manager, LouMecia Staton, to attend, along with the Thriving Families Support Services team. We all had the opportunity to join and walk together in support of the families and children living in High Point alongside FSP staff, their families, children and other community partners.

Alexus Prince, Fairview Family Resource Center Program Manager shared, “The FFRC offers a variety of services to support children and families who are at risk for child abuse or neglect. We believe in supporting and educating parents to foster healthy, and supportive environments for children to thrive.” Yolanda Blenman, Social Work Supervisor for the Guilford County Thriving Families Support Services team with Guilford County DSS provided this quote by Courtney A. Kemp to describe the importance of partnership and collaboration, “Great partnerships thrive because the people need each other.”

To all our partners across North Carolina…. thank you. Your efforts to partner, collaborate and find both new and creative ways to work together to serve families is certainly felt by the families you serve. YOU are helping to create the hopeful future that we wish for all our children and their families each day. Your service is honored, recognized, valued, and appreciated.
