Positive Childhood Experiences: The Foundation for Lifelong Health

Every child deserves more than just the absence of adversity, they need positive experiences that help them grow, thrive, and feel connected.

For decades, research has shown the negative impacts of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) on lifelong health. Now, groundbreaking studies highlight what protects children and families: Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs). These experiences build resilience, foster strong mental health, and buffer against the long-term effects of adversity.

What Are Positive Childhood Experiences?

Research has identified 7 key Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs) that serve as protective factors for long-term well-being. These are everyday moments and relationships that help children feel supported, connected, and safe:
1. Ability to talk with family about feelings
2. Feeling supported by family in difficult times
3. Enjoyment in participation in community traditions
4. Feeling a sense of belonging in high school
5. Feeling supported by friends
6. Having at least two non-parent adults who genuinely care
7. Feeling safe and protected by an adult at home

Just like Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), the benefits of PCEs are dose-responsive: the more positive experiences a child has, the more likely they are to have better mental health as adults. PCEs buffer against the negative lifelong health effects caused by exposure to ACEs. Emerging research also suggests that the absence of PCEs may be more damaging to the long-term health outcomes than the presence of ACEs.

3-5 PCEs reduce the likelihood of depression and poor mental health by 50%, and 6-7 PCEs reduce the likelihood of depression and poor mental health by 72%.

“Positive experiences are the food, not the medicine.”

Why PCEs Matter in North Carolina

To build a healthier, more resilient, and hopeful future for North Carolina, we must shift our focus from solely reducing adversity to also intentionally creating more positive experiences and environments where children and families can thrive. PCEs are not just an antidote to adversity; they are the foundation for healthy development, and they are vital for all of us.

How to Make a Difference

Everyone can play a role in creating and supporting opportunities for more PCEs to exist in their families, schools, and communities. Some strategies that help strengthen families include:

  • Tax policies that reduce financial stress
  • Investments in parenting programs that build skills and confidence
  • Access to quality, affordable child care
  • Safe, connected neighborhoods that foster play and belonging
  • Traditions and community celebrations that offer joy and continuity
  • Taking Action by joining the Positive Childhood Alliance. Be a part of a growing movement of cross-sector agencies, organizations, and individuals who are invested in nurturing positive childhoods for all North Carolina children.

Grow PCEs at Home and in Your Community

Want to grow PCEs for your child? There are many simple ways to connect, support and strengthen your child’s growth and development — at every age.

Babies and Toddlers (0-3)

  • Talk, sing, read, and play together
  • Cuddle and comfort often
  • Create calm routines like bath time and bedtime
  • Take care of yourself

Young Children (4-12)

  • Play, read, or cook together
  • Encourage helping with chores or setting small, attainable goals
  • Talk about friendships
  • Get involved in their school or community activities

Teenagers (13-18)

  • Keep the conversations going
  • Have family meals, walks, or watch a show together
  • Encourage involvement in community, sports, or local causes
  • Stay curious about their world

PCEs shape brain development, improve mental health, and strengthen resilience for a lifetime. When children have access to supportive relationships, safe environments, and opportunities to learn and belong, they are more likely to become healthy, thriving adults.
