Senator Jim Burgin Receives Positive Childhood Alliance NC’s Inaugural Ally for Change Award
Positive Childhood Alliance NC (PCANC) has honored Senator Jim Burgin with the 2025 Ally for Impact Award at its biennial Learning & Leadership Summit on March 19 at the Durham Convention Center.
The Ally for Change Award recognizes an individual policy champion at the state or local level who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to advancing policies that support children and families across North Carolina. This recognition highlights the critical importance of policy champions in creating systemic change that benefits all North Carolina children and families.
As a North Carolina State Senator and chair of both the Appropriations on Health and Human Services and Health Care Senate committees, Senator Burgin has established himself as a powerful advocate for child welfare reform, child health, and prevention of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).
“Senator Burgin’s legislative record demonstrates an unwavering commitment to creating systems and policies that truly support North Carolina’s children and families,” said Sharon Hirsch, President & CEO of PCANC. “His leadership on critical issues from maternal health to child welfare reform has moved our state forward in meaningful ways.”
Senator Burgin’s impact extends through his service on the North Carolina Children’s Fatality Task Force and the Joint Legislative Oversight Committee on Health and Human Services, where he has championed initiatives addressing Black infant mortality rates and trauma induced by the foster care system. Senator Burgin’s approach to policymaking shows a genuine concern for underserved communities, particularly children and families facing challenges. His ability to work across the aisle and build coalitions around child-focused legislation has been instrumental in advancing significant policy changes in North Carolina.
Senator Burgin’s legislative record includes sponsoring numerous bills aimed at protecting and supporting children and families.
